SI Joint Dysfunction

The sacroiliac (SI) joints are present on the lower back below the spine and above the tailbone. They help in shifting the load from the upper body to the lower body while walking or standing. These joints act as a shock-absorber with a very limited range of motion. The stretching of SI ligaments due to excess hip or lower back movements lead to sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction. As a result, you get lower back pain and spasms that can make routine activities including standing, walking, sitting and sleeping difficult.

Causes
  • Direct trauma to the hip ligaments around SI joint
  • Degeneration due to age
  • Repetitive use of the hip
  • Leg length discrepancy
  • Sports injuries
  • Repetitive sports like jogging
  • Ligament damage that holds the sacroiliac joint together
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Arthritis
  • Inflammatory joint disease like hip bursitis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Herniated disc
  • Pregnancy/childbirth

Symptoms
